Reel 2 Reel Issue # 170

I hope you have a great weekend and spooktacular Halloween. See you next week when we usher in November. The month to be thankful.

Howdy Adventureland Friends:

We have 2 birthdays to announce. Happy Birthday to my long-lost friends, Jeremiah & Josiah, on October 26. They share this day with Jackie Coogan (1914), Ivan Reitman (1946), Pat Sajak (1947), Jaclyn Smith (1947) and Dylan McDermott (1962).

You will notice some simple changes this week. I like the style of the newsletter. The structure, flow and content could use some help. This is your newsletter, so share your ideas on our blog.

ANOTHER SCARY WEEKEND 4 HOLLYWOOD

In another dead week for the movie business, the undead were the liveliest stiffs around.

The Josh Hartnett vampire flick, 30 Days of Night, topped the weekend box office with $16 million.

Wristcutters: A Love Story, a comedy about suicide victims in a quirky afterlife, was a even big hit, scoring $42,808 at just 3 theaters for a $14,269 per-screen average.

Last week's champ, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?, fell to second, with $12.2 million ($39 million overall), but did more business, per theater, than 30 Days of Night ($5,991 to $5,587).

Overall, ticket sales were down 8% compared to the same weekend last year. After a record-setting summer, this was the fifth straight down weekend.

The box office fall coincided with the rise of fall drama. From George Clooney's Michael Clayton (5th. place, $6.7 million; $21.6 million overall) to Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth: The Golden Age ($3.2 million; $11.2 million overall), the Oscar vehicles have failed to move ticket buyers.

This weekend, Rendition, starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, continued the tradition, earning less on 2,250 screens (9th. place, $4.1 million) than 3-D rerelease of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas pulled in at 564 theaters (8th. place, $5.3 million).

Ben Affleck's directing debut, Gone Baby Gone, opened with $5.5 million (6th. place). Despite good reviews and Oscar buzz, the bow was half as big as Mystic River, also based on a Boston novel by Dennis Lehane.

In its second weekend, We Own the Night, looked gone, baby, gone, slipping to 7th. place ($5.4 million; $19.7 million overall).

Halle Berry, Benicio Del Toro and their Oscars didn't fire up audiences about their new drama, Things We Lost in the Fire, which grossed $1.6 million at more than 1,100 theaters, and failed to crack the top 10.

Another wide release, the family-friendly ghost movie Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour, came up with just $586,283 from 1,121 theaters.

The all-new Ten Commandments — the movie's new, the commandments are the same — was smited, as well: $479,910 from 830 theaters.

A sports spoof wasn't the answer for the box-office, either. Just months after a ping-pong comedy, Balls of Fury, pulled in $11.4 million in its 1st. weekend, The Comebacks settled for $5.6 million (5th. place).

With fall off to a slow start, Hollywood should give thanks to the Rock. In its 4th. weekend, The Game Plan kept up its winning ways, bringing in another $8.2 million (3rd. place), and nearing $70 million overall.

Things looked bright on the art-house circuit, where The Darjeeling Limited ($1.3 million at 202 theaters) and Lars and the Real Girl ($188,603 at 21 theaters) continued to shine.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films based on final Friday-Sunday studio figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

01) 30 Days of Night @ $16 million
02) Why Did I Get Married? @ $12.2 million
03) The Game Plan @ $8.2 million
04) Michael Clayton @ $6.7 million
05) The Comebacks @ $5.6 million
06) Gone Baby Gone @ $5.5 million
07) We Own the Night @ $5.4 million
0 The Nightmare Before Christmas @ $5.3 million
09) Rendition @ $4.1 million
10) The Heartbreak Kid @ $3.8 million

LATIFAH LOVES HER CURVES

Queen Latifah says the definition of beauty is changing.

"Beauty is not just a white girl. It's so many different flavors and shades," the 37-year-old tells People in its latest issue. "It's good for regular girls because the meter (for beauty) has been a slim white girl."

"(In Hollywood) we've definitely gotten better with body type," she says. "It used to be just me! Now with Jennifer Hudson's success and America Ferrera, I got some successors to take the reins on this whole bodylicious thing."

Latifah describes herself as being voluptuous - "definitely curvaceous."

"I think I'm normal compared to the statistics," she says. "This is a big country nowadays."

The star of "Chicago" and other films says she had elective breast-reduction surgery in 2003 to alleviate years of back and shoulder pain.

"I didn't want to get it. But I had lost 25 pounds and my breasts didnt go anywhere! I was still carrying that load," she tells the magazine.

However, "I didn't quite want them to be this small," she laughs.

Before surgery, Latifah says she was "an E or an F cup. I was pretty big. Now Im like a DD. I wanted to be a triple. They took one D too many! So that was hard to deal with... I missed my old look."

Latifah says she isn't interested in more surgery.

"There are people who love (plastic surgery) and want to cut and chop anything. I'm like, 'Y'all are crazy!'"

COPPOLA SAYS FILM NO COMEBACK

The film, premiered at the Rome Film Festival, is Coppola's first since "The Rainmaker" in 1997. Before taking on this film, he was working on
