Reel 2 Reel Issue # 203

Yes, it is manic monday and I am running extremely late. I went to the drive-in friday and got really wet. Then I had to work all weekend.

'Wall-E' is super and can be seen @ Sky-Vue this weekend and possibly next. This is a must see family movie for both kids and adults.

I missed most of 'Get Smart.' What I did see was not all that great. But I like Steve Carell and The Rock. So, I am going to pass judgement here.

Hey Adventureland Friends:

Sorry this is so absurdly late. I have working in the body shop. Yep, that very thing I hate. But, the money was to good to pass up.

This has been a heart wrenching month. First, we lose Tim Russert. Now, the comic genious of George Carlin. And we have few legendary comics remaining today.

June is not always bad. Usually it is a month of new beginnings - graduations. Our own friendly Patsy has grauated this month. Drop in and hello.

We missed the Economy Homecoming Day parade. But I did see some friendly faces. One of those was Brenda. I'm so glad that I ran into you. You are a real peach.

My Shining Star is the late comic legend George Carlin. His famed "7 Dirty Words" is referenced in the Shock Jock's 'Private Parts.'

The Snack Bar features several lemonade recipes. And not just any lemonade. All are rather unique with a summer time twist of some sort.

Blog Bytes covers a number of topics. Everything from video games to another celebrity turned politician. I am looking for a PC game designer.

'GET SMART' GETS THE BOX OFFICE CROWN

Audiences still get Maxwell Smart. "Get Smart," the Warner Bros. big screen update of the 1960s spy sitcom, raked in $39.2 million to debut as the #1 weekend movie, according to studio estimates.

Movie-goers did not get Mike Myers' "The Love Guru," the weekend's other new wide release. The Paramount Pictures comedy took in $14 million to open at No. 4.

In limited release, "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" opened strongly with $222,697 in 5 theaters, averaging $44,539, compared with $10,012 in 3,911 theaters for
"Get Smart."

"Kit Kittredge," released by Picturehouse and based on the American Girl dolls, stars Abigail Breslin as a 9-year-old aspiring reporter during the Depression. The film expands into wide release July 2.

The weekend's No. 2 spot was a photo finish between "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Incredible Hulk."

In its third weekend, "Kung Fu Panda" pulled in $21.7 million, raising its domestic total to $155.6 million. "Incredible Hulk" was right behind with $21.6 million in its second weekend to lift its total to $96.5 million.

"Panda" & "Hulk" were close enough that their rankings could change when final numbers are released.

Hollywood's summer surge continued, total revenues climbing for the fourth straight weekend compared to last year. The top 12 movies took in $136.9 million, up 10% from the same weekend in 2007, when Carell's
"Evan Almighty" opened at No. 1 with $31.2 million.

The industry is on track to beat the revenue record set last summer, when receipts topped $4 billion for the first time.

"While the country may be suffering with a so-called recession, people are finding movies a fairly inexpensive way to get their entertainment," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "This proves the conventional wisdom that, during tough economic times, the movies flourish."

In "Get Smart," Carell re-creates Max Smart created by Don Adams, with Hathaway playing Agent 99 as the duo try to stop a plot to arm unstable governments with nuclear bombs. Dwayne Johnson co-stars as a colleague.

Critics picked apart the movie, but Warner Bros. figures that was a wise commercial move. While 60% of the audience was 25 or older, that still meant a sizable younger crowd, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution.

"We were very pleased to have 40% under 25, because they did not grow up on the television show," Fellman said. "The filmmakers did a great job in making that happen. They broadened the audience and brought it into a modern-day bent."

Myers - who dreamed up "Love Guru," co-wrote the script and served as a producer - has been accustomed to blockbuster openings with the "Shrek" and "Austin Powers" sequels.

"Mike Myers, the master of the spy spoof, opens his movie against a spy comedy, and the spy movie genre was obviously a lot more appealing to audiences," Dergarabedian said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Get Smart" @ $39.2 million.

02) "Kung Fu Panda" @ $21.7 million.

03) "The Incredible Hulk" @ $21.6 million.

04) "The Love Guru" @ $14 million.

05) "The Happening" @ $10 million.

06) "Indiana Jones 4" @ $8.4 million.

07) "Don't Mess With The Zohan" @ $7.2 million.

0 "Sex and the City" @ $6.5 million.

09) "Iron Man" @ $4 million.

10) "The Strangers" @ $1.9 million

GEORGE DENIS PATRICK CARLIN

DOB:  May 12, 1937 - New York City, NY
DOD:  June 22, 2008 - Santa Monica, CA (heart failure)

George Carlin, arguably, is the greatest and -- after Lenny Bruce -- most influential stand-up comedian of all time. An Irish Catholic born and raised in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, Carlin started out as a conventional comedian and had achieved a fair degree of success as a Bill Cosby style raconteur in nightclubs and on TV until the late 1960s, when he radically overhauled his persona. The new persona, which is more in line with who and what George Carlin is, has been "George Carlin" ever since and is what made him a great stand-up comedian. Carlin's forte is Lenny Bruce-style social and political commentary, spiced with nihilistic observations about people and religion peppered with black humor. He is also noted for his use of language. Carlin's notorious "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine was part of a radio censorship case that made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978.

CONSOLE MAKERS & INDIE GAME MAKERS

In second grade, James Silva didn't just play "Mario" and "Zelda" but cooked up ideas for games. While other kids dreamed of being an astronaut, he felt destined to be a video game designer. Besides a good idea, game developers needed a distribution deal. Silva is a one-man game maker for Xbox 360. He's among a growing number of independents working to distribute their games to Internet-connected consoles with the help of game box makers seeking to meet demand for titles.

BROLIN & MORTENSEN BACK SAG

Jack Nicholson, Viggo Mortensen, Nick Nolte and other actors will come out in support of the Screen Actors Guild and call for a smaller union to return to the bargaining table. The ad contains 60 actors including Josh Brolin, Rosanna & Patricia Arquette, and others.
The endorsement of the union's tactics comes just days after Tom Hanks added his name to a petition calling on actors to endorse a deal reached by the smaller American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

HANKS SUPPORTS AFTRA DEAL

Tom Hanks has thrown his support behind a contract reached by the smaller of 2 actors unions, putting his name against plans by the larger union to wring more concessions from the studios. Screen Actors Guild continued to negotiate and urged its members to vote down the AFTRA deal. Both unions' contracts expire June 30. Among other prominent backers of the petition are Richard Masur, Loretta Swit, James Cromwell and other actors including Adam Arkin, Morgan Fairchild and Tess Harper.

FORMER ACTOR SETS SIGHT ON US SENATE

Sonny Landham carved out a tough-guy reputation in a series of big-screen roles. He pulls no punches in his newest role: Libertarian challenger to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The actor says he's serious about his longshot bid, because too many politicians are indifferent to voters' problems. Landham refers to McConnell, a four-term Republican, as "Boss Hogg." He bluntly called Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford an
"elitist." Even President Bush is a target: "He took us into a war on lies," Landham said.

NEW BOOK FROM 'MARLEY & ME' AUTHOR

Author John Grogan is working on a prequel to the memoir about his dog. "The Longest Trip Home" will be released in October by William Morrow, the publisher said. "It is the powerful, often hilarious story of a son in the making, and of growing up in a loving, but comically old-school Catholic family," said the statement issued by Morrow. "From his troublemaking childhood to his courtship of a fiery blonde named Jenny, Grogan writes about how he came to terms with who he is and what he believes." "Even before 'Marley & Me' was published, I knew this was the story I wanted to tell next," Grogan (51) said. "'The Longest Trip Home' is a story very close to my heart." A film version of "Marley & Me," starring Owen Wilson & Jennifer Aniston, is slated for release in December.

SPIELBERG LOOKS 2 DIRECT 'THE 39 CLUES'

A multimedia-multi-author narrative being planned by the U.S. publisher of Harry Potter picked up a famous patron: Steven Spielberg. DreamWorks has acquired the film rights to "The 39 Clues," a mystery series-online game from Scholastic. Spielberg hopes to direct. "'The 39 Clues' takes creative leaps to expand the story experience from the pages of the books to multiple stages of discovery and imagination," Spielberg said in a statement. "Together with Scholastic, we have the opportunity to develop this property that says
'film,' 'family,' 'fun' and 'franchise.'" "The 39 Clues," which also features 355 collectible cards, is a planned 10-book series about a powerful, mysterious family in New York. "The Maze of Bones," was written by Rick Riordan, author of "The Lightning Thief." Jude Watson & Gordon Korman are among those who will write future volumes.

One short-sleeve polo shirt, a tank top and black pants: $43,750. Inflation run amok? Nope - just the premium you pay for the blood of Tony Soprano. 25 outfits worn by James Gandolfini raised $187,750 at auction that aids soldiers. Gandolfini attended the Christie's auction with a soldier from Wounded Warrior Project. The highest bid was for the bloodstained suit of clothes, shirt, tank top and pants, worn in a scene where Tony is shot by Uncle Junior. The next highest bid was $21,250 for a 4-piece costume that included a blue, red and yellow striped robe and boxer shorts that Tony wore in numerous episodes. Other outfits included a tan cotton bathrobe with lavender trim and 'S' insignia on the breast pocket featured in the pilot when Tony fetched the morning paper and fed the ducks. It fetched $13,750. All of the outfits were authenticated by Gandolfini and many had the original production tags attached.

He includes 3 soundtrack CDs, and 16 scenes that never aired. Four hundred dollars won't buy you Tony Soprano. James Gandolfini didn't participate in any of the "extras."

HANKS & WILSON LOSE HOME DISPUTE

Blaine County judge has rejected Tom Hanks' second request for arbitration over what the actor says was $2.5 million in faulty workmanship by the company that built his compound in central Idaho. Following the decision, a lawyer for the construction company said it will seek monetary damages from Hanks & Rita Wilson for "abuse of process" for filing the second request.
Fifth District Court Judge Robert Elgee ruled that the dispute between Hanks & Storey Construction had been decided in 2004 when American Arbitration Association awarded the company $1.85 million. In November, Hanks & Wilson filed the second request, alleging defects had been discovered. Elgee rejected the request. New York firm 42 West, which represents Hanks & Wilson, issued a statement saying an appeal is likely by Sun Valley Trust, owner of the property. "The court ruled against Sun Valley Trust, but also admitted that its decision was harsh," John Hanover, attorney said.
"Idaho law in this area is not clearly established and everyone, including the judge, knew that this issue was headed for Idaho Court of Appeals reguardless."

JOLIE & PITT DONATES 2 IRAQI KIDS

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie's love for children is not limited to their own: The couple donated $1 million to help kids affected by the war, Education Partnership for Children of Conflict announced. The organization will distribute the donation, made through the couple's
Jolie-Pitt Foundation, to organizations working on behalf of children in Iraq. Children in the U.S. will also benefit. "These educational support programs for children of conflict are the best way to help them heal," said Jolie. "We hope to encourage others to give to these great organizations," Pitt added. Money will benefit Armed Services YMCA Operation Hero Pro. (military children); Women for Women Int. (Iraqi women & children); Int. Rescue Committee (Iraq schools); and NineMillion.org (learning materials). Last year, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation gave $300,000 to support the International Rescue Committee's relief program for Darfur refugees.

Beijing is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time, which means many events will take place while Americans are sleeping. Coverage is expected to be available within 12 hours.
Users must have Microsoft Windows Vista to use the service, which runs on the operating system's Media Center.

COMCAST'S FANDANGO BUYS DISNEY'S MOVIES.COM

Fandango Inc. said it acquired Movies.com from Walt Disney for an undisclosed amount. Fandango, owned by Comcast, sells tickets for 1,300 theaters. It said it will now handle the ticket functions for Movies.com.

Opening @ Sky-Vue this weekend is 'The Incredible Hulk.' The same weekend as our local fireworks and home show. Too many choices and too little time...

HAVE A HAPPY JULY 4TH!
