Reel 2 Reel Issue # 204

Where do the days go? It seems that I routinely get nothing accomplished. Well, atleast no where near enough. And the problem just seems to get worse.

Hey Adventureland Friends:

Sorry this is so absurdly late again. Well, not as late as last week. I wish that I had an excuse, but I am at a loss. For some unknown reason I can not get things done anymore.

Koda Bear (22M now) lost one of his puppies. He had been hit by a car. His mom & dad quickly buried the puppy without telling him. Not my idea at all.

Some how, kids know these things. He often babbles about "puppy died, mommy did it. She buried him." I'm not sure how much he understands.

He has been to a funeral or two in his short life. I had him help me bury one of his goldfish at sea. But, I'm afraid watching 'Narnia' just days before may of gicen him the wrong idea about death.

The Snack Bar has lemonade recipes last week. This week I have iced tea recipes. And not just the same old sweet tea or iced tea with lemon either.

Blog Bytes covers a number of topics again. There is a review of 'WALL-E.' Tributes to Heath Ledger & George Carlin. My thoughts on another Hollywood strike.

'WALL-E' CLEANED UP @ THE BOX OFFICE

A lonely little robot made millions of friends during the weekend - and outgunned Angelina Jolie. "WALL-E," the Pixar tale of a robot on a long-abandoned Earth, debuted at #1 with $62.5 million in ticket sales.

The top 12 movies took in $179.2 million, up 22% from the same weekend last year, when Pixar's "Ratouille" opened with $47 million.

It was the fifth straight weekend that revenues climbed. Revenues for the summer season that began May 2 are up 6% over last year's record pace, according to Media By Numbers.

The sour economy and high gas prices helped to fuel Hollywood's boom, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. Movies tend to thrive when times are tough because they are relatively cheap compared to sports events, concerts and other outings.

"Audiences are obviously gravitating toward the movies as their first choice for entertainment," Paul said.
"It doesn't take that much gas to get to the local multiplex. That might have a little something to do with this, as well."

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Warner Bros. comedy "Get Smart," slipped to third with $20 million, raising its total to $77.3 million.

"WALL-E" maintains the perfect track record of Pixar, the Walt Disney unit that has made 9 films, all of them successes, including "Cars," "Monsters, Inc." and "Toy Story." "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" put up the biggest opening-weekend numbers among Pixar movies, both pulling in over $70 million.

Set centuries in the future, "WALL-E" is the story of a rickety, walking trash compactor that humans left running after abandoning the over-polluted planet.

The movie overcame a dialogue challenge - the two main robots barely speak, beyond each other's names - using wildly inventive visuals and sound effects to propel much of the story.

Like other Pixar films, "WALL-E" packed in family crowds, as well as adults without children.

"The real secret is they're not children's movies. They're movies for everybody. Children absolutely adore them, but parents enjoy them on a different level," said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney. "You can't be nine-for-nine like Pixar is without that."

The G-rated "WALL-E" was complemented by Jolie's R-rated "Wanted," which Universal originally planned to release back in March. The studio decided the movie was too good to release at a slower moviegoing time and moved it to summer on a weekend when competition for a violent action tale would be light.

"We knew 'WALL-E' would be huge, but it's not the same audience as 'Wanted,'" said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal.

"Wanted" stars Jolie as a member of a secret society of assassins whose new recruit (James McAvoy) is trained to use his superhuman abilities to take out a rogue killer.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "WALL-E" @ $62.5 million.

02) "Wanted" @ $51.1 million.

03) "Get Smart" @ $20 million.

04) "Kung Fu Panda" @ $11.7 million.

05) "The Incredible Hulk" @ $9.2 million.

06) "The Love Guru" @ $5.4 million.

07) "Indiana Jones 4" @ $5 million.

0 "The Happening" @ $3.9 million.

09) "Sex and the City" @ $3.8 million.

10) "Don't Mess With Zohan" @ $3.2 million.

PEACH ICED TEA

Peach juice is so nice in the heat of the summer. Lemon is nice, but you can only drink so much lemon iced tea. Try something different.

Ingredients:
3 12-oz cans of peach juice
2 quarts tea
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice

Preparation:
Combine everything and chill. Serve over ice.

BOSTON ICED TEA

A wonderfully tart recipe for cranberry iced tea. The name comes from the cranberry bogs in the Boston area (so I've been told). It's a very refreshing drink.

Ingredients:
4 quarts water
1 cup sugar
15 tea bags
12 oz frozen cranberry juice concentrate

Preparation:
Heat water to boiling, and add sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add tea bags, remove from heat and let steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Remove tea bags, and add cranberry juice concentrate. Stir until melted and mixed, then allow to cool to room temperate before refrigerating. Serve over ice.
Serves 14

APPLE & HONEY ICED TEA

A sweet and fruity iced tea. I really think that iced tea is thoroughly improved by adding a good dose of fresh summer honey. Sweet and smooth.

Ingredients:
3 cups water, boiling
4 tea bags
1/3 cup honey
3 cups apple juice

Preparation:
Steep tea bags in hot water for 5 minutes. Strain out tea bags, and stir in honey and juice. Mix until honey is dissolved. Chill and serve over ice.

SPICED MAPLE ICED TEA

A very unusual mix of flavours in this green tea recipe. The maple syrup and anise are so sweet, but is balanced by the fresh and natural taste of green tea.

Ingredients:
6 tbs green tea
1 tbs anise, powdered
1/4 cup maple syrup
Lemon slices for garnish

Preparation:
Steep tea in 6 cups of hot (not quite boiling) water. Strain out tea, and add anise and maple syrup. Stir until syrup is dissolved and blended. Let cool and serve over ice, with a slice of lemon.

LEMON ALMOND ICED TEA

This is a sparkling iced tea, with the unusual combination of lemon, almond and vanilla. You could use regular soda water, if you prefer less lemon.

Ingredients:
4 cups boiling water
10 tea bags, black
2 lemons, sliced thinly
1 cup sugar
1 tbs almond extract
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 2-litre bottle of lemon carbonated drink

Preparation:
Brew tea in a saucepan, and steep for 10 minutes. Put lemon slices into a large pitcher, giving them each a squeeze as you go. Add sugar into pitcher. Mix in tea. Add flavourings and pop right before serving. If you are not going to serve immediately, hold off on the extracts and lemon soda until then.
Serves 12

REVIEW: ROBOTIC ROMANCE HAS HEART

Within WALL-E beats the sweetest, warmest heart - a robotic representation of humanity's highest potential.
Within the sci-fi adventure "WALL-E" lies an artistic truth: that Pixar's track record remains impeccable.
Following high-concept movies about talking cars and a gourmet rat, this is Disney's boldest experiment yet.
"WALL-E" is essentially a silent film in which the two main characters, a pair of robots, communicate through bleeps and blips.

COMICS REMEMBER GEORGE CARLIN

He was the comedian who actually said the 7 words you can never say on television, but friends and family remembered George Carlin as a man who, when he was off stage, had only a kind word for everyone he met. At a memorial service attended by 150 people - "That was as small as we could keep it," chuckled Kelly Carlin McCall - her father was memorialized by Bill Maher, Garry Shandling and others. Overall, Carlin's daughter said, the service was a happy event, one presided over in part by her father, who spoke from a montage of video clips assembled from his 51-year career.

HEATH'S HOMETOWN NAMES THEATER

The Australian hometown of Heath Ledger named a theater in his honor. The $87 million, 575-seat Heath Ledger Theater in Perth is a fitting tribute because Ledger was always supportive of other young actors, Western Australia state Premier Alan Carpenter said.
Ledger died at 28 of an accidental prescription drug overdose in New York in January. "The Dark Knight" opens in theaters July 18.

CAMERAS KEEP ROLLING DESPITE THREAT

On-location movie shoots are on the rise, despite the possibility of an actors strike. Several big movies set for next year also are still rolling cameras. The activity seems to belie assertions by the AMP/TP that the industry had lapsed into a "de facto strike" by SAG. The contract between SAG and the studios expired Tuesday. Union leaders said they had not called for a strike vote and would remain at the bargaining table.
The smaller AFTRA, meanwhile, awaited the results of a ratification vote on a contract. Results due July 8.

BRITNEY IS HOUSE-HUNTING AGAIN

Court records show Britney Spears is house-hunting - preferably for something greener, quieter and with a bigger backyard. Documents show that Spears seeks a house with a larger yard that's closer to parks and recreation areas for her children, Sean Preston & Jayden James. She bought her Beverly Hills home for $7 million last year. Spears' father, James, requested the sale in mid-June, and a court commissioner agreed. James Spears is acting as his daughter's conservator.
The children's father, Kevin Federline, has custody.

Pamela Anderson auctioned her 2000 Dodge Viper for $65,000 as a donation to run an anti-snake slaughter campaign. Michael McGraw, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said the group will raise awareness about the cruel methods used to skin animals such as snakes and crocodiles. According to PETA, these animals, whose exotic skins are used in handbags and shoes, are often skinned alive, and suffer for hours or even days before dying.

HILTON MAKES GOOD ON HER PROMISE

Paris Hilton is making good on her promise to become a better person. The socialite (27) made an "extremely generous" donation toward the construction of a medical building at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, hospital officials said, although they did not specify the amount. "The children I have met through my involvement with Childrens Hospital have truly touched my heart," Hilton said. "I am proud to make a donation and lend my name to the fundraising effort to help children who are facing terribly serious illnesses." The 460,000-square-foot Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases is expected to open in 2010. After spending 23 days in jail last year for violating probation, Hilton told CNN's Larry King the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted "to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis."

DR. DREW: ADDICTED CELEBS NEED MORE REHAB

Hollywood has a drug problem, and isn't committing the time to fix it, according to Dr. Drew. Not only are substances plentiful & acceptable in celeb circles, but stars opt for abbreviated programs, Drew Pinsky, host of "Celebrity Rehab," told The AP. Drew, who has studied what draws stars to drugs, presents his findings in "VH1 News Presents: Dr. Drew's Celebrity Addiction Special." "Today, in the celebrity world, we're seeing an addiction epidemic," Pinsky said, adding the disease of addiction is more deadly than cancer. "If you had cancer, you would drop everything,"
he says. "You would take whatever time it needed to do the treatment and do what it takes to get out on the other side. Here's a disease that is more dangerous, and we can't get people to take 3 months." This gives celeb drug addicts a "bad prognosis," Pinsky told The AP. "I don't like treating celebs," he said. "They're very, very difficult."

SMITH'S SCHOOL: SCIENTOLOGY OR NOT?

Will Smith's soon-to-open private school is not a Scientology facility, as some reports have suggested, the academy's director said. Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith have founded the New Village Academy, scheduled to open in September. The school will use methods developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. A few teachers belong to the church. But the couple say they are not Scientologists, and the academy's director insists the facility has no religious affiliation. "We are a secular school, and just like all nonreligious independent schools, faculty and staff do not promote their own religions at school or pass on the beliefs of their particular faith to children," New Village Academy director Jacqueline Olivier told the LA Times. Oliver said some school staffers are Scientologists, Muslim, Christian or Jewish. In addition to reading and math, the school offers yoga, robotics & etiquette.

LIVE FROM NEW PORT: IT'S CHEVY CHASE.

Chase Chase, the comic actor and original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" will host the Newport Jazz Festival for the second year in a row. The JVC Jazz Festival-Newport runs Aug. 8-10 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Fort Adams State Park. Chase, a jazz fan and pianist, will introduce the musicians performing on the festival's main stage, including Aretha Franklin, Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock.
In college, Chase (64) played drums in a jazz band with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who later became Steely Dan. Before "Saturday Night Live," then unknown Chase frequented clubs where he became friendly with many jazz legends. Miles Davis even invited him to sit in one night in place of his drummer Tony Williams.

SNIPES PETITIONS COURT 2 LEAVE COUNTRY

Lawyers for Wesley Snipes are asking a Florida judge to let the actor (45) leave the country while they appeal his 3 federal tax convictions. Snipes wants to work on 2 films, "Gallowwalker" and "Chasing the Dragon," in London and in Bangkok, Thailand, according to documents filed in federal court. The documents say post-production editing of "Gallowwalker" is set to begin July 14th, and filming of "Chasing the Dragon" will start in September. Snipes was sentenced in April to 3 years in prison on 3 counts of failing to file his
income tax returns. The government alleged that Snipes,

and "Jungle Fever," hasn't filed since 1998.

MURRAY'S DIVORCE IS FINALIZED

Bill Murray and his wife of 11 years are divorced. A judge in Charleston County signed off on the divorce June 13, barely a month after Jennifer Butler Murray asked for the separation. The couple were married in July 1997. The couple's 4 children will live with her, while the actor will have visitation rights and pay child support. Jennifer Murray will get their home on Sullivans Island, S.C., and a second house in Hemet, Ca. Other documents detailing the divorce were sealed at the couple's request. In her original complaint, filed May 12, Jennifer Murray alleged that her husband abused her and was addicted to marijuana and alcohol. The prenuptial agreement requires Murray pay $7 million
within 60 days of the divorce. Murray was a cast member
of "Saturday Night Live." His screen credits include the "Ghostbusters" movies, "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day." He is an owner of Charleston RiverDogs MLB team.

JOLIE RESTS IN FRENCH MATERNITY WARD

Angelina Jolie's obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann, who is watching over the actress (33) at a French Riviera hospital where she is expected to give birth.
The hospital announced that Jolie had checked into its Santa Maria maternity clinic to be kept under doctors' watch and rest before she gives birth. A hospital spokeswoman said the births were "not for right away," but Jolie would almost certainly stay until then.
Jolie has the best room in the hospital, on the fifth floor, with an "unobstructed view" over Bay of Angels. She arrived by helicopter, landing on the hospital's roof. The actress reserved 4 rooms on the maternity ward, with a bodyguard keeping watch. The Brangelina clan has been settling into a new home in the south of France, 60 miles from Nice. The mayor confirmed that the couple had moved into the Miraval Estate villa.

FIRE DESTROYS 'TOP GUN' EATERY

The restaurant where Tom Cruise crooned to Kelly McGillis in the movie "Top Gun" has been gutted by a fire in San Diego. A cook at Kansas City Barbecue says the blaze started in an open cooking pit and spread quickly to the rest of the restaurant's interior.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque says the landmark restaurant is "destroyed."
But no one was hurt and the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes. A sign in the restaurant notes that the 1986 movie's "sleazy bar scene" was filmed there.
Luque estimates the damage at $400,000, not including the cost of photographs and props from the film.

TATUM AVOIDS JAIL WITH GUILTY PLEA

Tatum O'Neal pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in connection with her June cocaine possession arrest.
Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Elisa Koenderman has ordered the actress (44) to spend 2 half-day sessions in a drug treatment program and pay a $95 surcharge.
If O'Neal has met those conditions when she returns to court September 4th, the case will be dismissed. She won a best supporting actress Oscar at 10 for 1973's
"Paper Moon," becoming the youngest person ever to win an Academy Award. O'Neal, daughter of Ryan O'Neal, has publicly chronicled her struggles with drugs.

I would think that next week will be better. But that just seems to be less likely every week. Oh well, I will give it the old college try as usual.
